Automated watering is great for consistency and holidays — but the most popular products (sealed self-watering pots) are also the ones most likely to cause rot, because they trap water with nowhere for excess to escape. Choose the method by how well it still allows drainage.

What's the safest way to automate watering for houseplants?

Why does automatic watering sometimes cause root rot?

Most failures happen with sealed self-watering pots or reservoirs that keep the soil constantly damp with no way for excess water to drain — roots need oxygen as well as water, and permanently soggy soil suffocates them.

Are watering spikes/globes reliable?

They're a rough approximation at best — the release rate depends heavily on soil moisture, temperature, and how tightly the spike seals, so they're better as a short-term backup (a week away) than a long-term system.

Can I build a DIY wicking system?

Yes — a cotton cord or strip of felt, one end buried in the soil and the other in a reservoir of water below/beside the pot, wicks water up as the soil dries. It self-regulates roughly with the plant's actual water use, which is safer than a fixed-schedule drip.

Should I still use well-draining soil with an automatic system?
