A layer of rocks at the bottom of the pot is one of the most repeated pieces of plant advice online — and for pots that already have drainage holes, it doesn't actually do what people think. Here's what LECA and lava rock are actually good for.

The fix for poor drainage is a pot with real holes and a well-draining soil mix, not a rock layer underneath.

Should I use LECA instead of soil?
That's a different technique — full LECA (semi-hydroponic) growing replaces soil entirely and needs a specific watering/nutrient routine. It's not the same as adding a thin LECA layer under regular potting soil, which offers little benefit.
What should I use instead of a rock drainage layer?

Is it ever worth adding rocks under the soil?
