A 2-3 day trip doesn't require any gadgets for most houseplants — they're far more resilient to a short dry spell than most new owners assume. The real risk isn't neglect, it's overcompensating before you leave.
Before You Go
Don't water extra 'just in case' — that soggy soil sits unattended the whole trip, which is riskier than a few dry days.
Move it out of intense, unshaded direct sun only if it would be scorching while you're not there to notice.
A spot near a door that gets opened, or a window with a strong draft, is worth avoiding for a few days if easy to move.
Watering spikes, wicks, and timers are for week-long trips or longer — unnecessary complexity for a 2-3 day weekend.

Will my plant survive a weekend away with no one watering it?
Almost certainly, yes — most houseplants comfortably handle 2-4 days without water, and many prefer that over being watered right before you leave out of anxiety. Water normally on your usual schedule, don't add extra 'just in case'.
Should I water my plant extra before I leave for a short trip?
No — this is the most common mistake. Overwatering before a trip means the plant sits in soggy soil the entire time you're away with no way for you to catch a problem, raising the risk of root rot far more than a few dry days would.
Should I move my plant before leaving for the weekend?
Only if it's in direct hot sun that could scorch it while unattended, or near a door/window with a draft. Otherwise, leave it in its usual spot — it's already adjusted there.
Do I need a self-watering gadget for just a weekend trip?
No — spikes, wicks, or timers are more useful for trips of a week or longer. For 2-3 days, your plant's normal watering schedule (don't move it up or down) is enough for the vast majority of houseplants.
