Aji Mango

Capsicum baccatum — 10,000–30,000 SHU

Aji Mango is a Peruvian Baccatum variety producing large, pendant, orange-yellow fruits with an intensely sweet, tropical mango aroma. One of the most flavour-forward peppers in the world, with a fruity sweetness that genuinely evokes ripe mango before moderate heat develops. Tall, vigorous, and highly productive — a standout variety for growers who prioritise flavour over extreme heat.

🌱 How to Grow Aji Mango

☀️Full Sun

8+ hours of direct sun daily. Tall Baccatum varieties thrive in maximum sun exposure and produce the best fruit flavour under full light.

🌡️Temperature

22–32°C is ideal. Aji Mango has South American origins and loves warmth — protect from cold nights and ensure the growing season is long enough.

💧Watering

Consistent moisture throughout the season. Large pendant fruits need steady water supply during development to prevent blossom end rot and fruit drop.

🪴Pot Size

20–25L minimum. This is a tall, vigorous plant with an extensive root system. Undersizing the pot will significantly limit yield and plant height.

🪵Staking

Stake early — before fruiting begins. This variety grows very tall and the fruit-laden branches will snap without proper support. Tie loosely at multiple points.

❄️Overwintering

Highly recommended. Aji Mango is a perennial that fruits much more heavily in year two and beyond. Bring indoors before first frost and keep at 10°C minimum.

🩺 Common Problems

Very tall plant managementMinor

Cause: Baccatum variety naturally grows 90–150 cm with multiple tall branches.

Fix: Stake well before fruiting. Grow against a wall or fence if in open ground to provide wind protection and support.

Slow ripening of large fruitsMinor

Cause: Large orange fruits take longer to mature than smaller varieties.

Fix: Wait for full colour change to deep orange-yellow. Do not harvest early — the mango aroma fully develops only when completely ripe.

Spider mites in warm conditionsModerate

Cause: Hot, dry conditions favour spider mite populations on leaf undersides.

Fix: Apply neem oil spray every 7–10 days. Increase humidity around plants. Inspect leaf undersides regularly for early detection.

Long season in UK climatesModerate

Cause: Requires 90–110 days of warm growing conditions — challenging in the UK.

Fix: Start seeds January–February indoors with a heat mat. A greenhouse or polytunnel is strongly preferred for reliable ripening in northern climates.

❓ Common Questions

What makes Aji Mango unique?

The genuinely mango-like aroma and sweetness — it's one of the few peppers where the flavour precedes and competes with the heat rather than being overwhelmed by it.

How does Baccatum taste different from Annuum/Chinense?

Baccatum varieties have a distinctive fruity sweetness and complex aroma that's different from Annuum (straightforward vegetal) or Chinense (tropical/floral). Many food enthusiasts consider them the most flavourful family.

Can I use Aji Mango in cooking?

Excellent in ceviche, fruit salsas, tropical-inspired hot sauces, and marinades for fish and poultry — anywhere mango or tropical fruit is used.

How tall does it grow?

90–150 cm easily — stake early and give it room. The height produces more fruiting branches and heavier yields.
