Mammillaria vs Opuntia Cactus
Mammillaria and Opuntia are both classic beginner cacti sold everywhere, but their spines behave in opposite ways. Mammillaria bocasana is covered in soft, fluffy white hair-like spines that look harmless and mostly are. Opuntia microdasys — bunny ears — looks equally soft and fuzzy from a distance, but is covered in glochids: tiny barbed hairs that detach into skin at the lightest touch and are much harder to remove than they look.

The Verdict
For a home with pets, children, or narrow walkways, Mammillaria bocasana is the safer choice — its spines are still sharp but far less likely to embed than Opuntia's glochids, which detach at the lightest brush and are genuinely unpleasant to remove. Opuntia is worth it for the classic paddle look, but keep it somewhere nobody will lean past it.
