Anthurium Spathe Browning — Age, Low Humidity or Thrips Damage

Commonly affects: Anthurium andraeanum, Anthurium scherzerianum

The waxy, heart-shaped spathe (the colourful modified leaf surrounding the spadix) develops brown patches, edges, or discolouration and loses its characteristic glossy sheen. In freshly opened spathes, browning indicates environmental stress or pest damage. In spathes that have been open for 2–3 months, browning is natural senescence. Distinguishing age-related decline from pathological browning is the first diagnostic step.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Natural senescence — a single Anthurium spathe typically remains attractive for 6–8 weeks before naturally browning; this requires no intervention
  2. 2Thrips feeding on spathe tissue, creating silvery streaks that oxidise to brown; check the spathe underside for black frass and tiny insects
  3. 3Low humidity (below 50%) desiccating the spathe's surface cells, causing the edges to brown and curl before natural senescence
  4. 4Water or fertiliser landing directly on the spathe, causing chemical burns that create irregular brown patches

Solution Steps

  1. 1First, determine the age of the spathe — if it has been open for more than 6–8 weeks, browning is normal. Cut it off at the base of the peduncle to redirect energy to the next spathe.
  2. 2Inspect the spathe and all leaf surfaces under a bright light for thrips frass (black specks) and silver streaking. If present, treat with spinosad or insecticidal soap.
  3. 3Raise ambient humidity to 60–70% using a humidifier — low humidity is the most common cause of spathe browning in young flowers.
  4. 4Water and fertilise at soil level only — never allow liquid to land directly on the spathe, as calcium and mineral deposits cause permanent brown marks.
  5. 5Move the plant away from air currents from fans or air conditioning, which desiccate the spathe's surface rapidly.
  6. 6If the emerging new spathe already shows brown edges before fully opening, this indicates a systemic stress issue — check root health and overall growing conditions.

Prevention Tip

After fertilising, use a damp cloth to gently wipe any spray that has landed on spathes — mineral deposits from water or fertiliser leave permanent brown marks on the waxy surface within 24–48 hours of drying.
