Plant Comparison
Colocasia Black Magic vs Illustris
Both of these are dark-leaved Colocasia esculenta cultivars grown as dramatic statement plants, and the difference is how the dark colour is distributed. Black Magic is uniformly deep purple-black across the whole leaf. Illustris keeps a dark purple-black centre but leaves bright green veins standing out sharply against it, for a stained-glass effect Black Magic does not have.

Choose Colocasia Black Magic ifโฆ
- โYou want the largest, most uniformly dark elephant ear available
- โYou have outdoor space, a pond margin, or a very large container
- โYou want maximum drama and height in a summer display
- โYou have full sun to hold the deepest black colour
Choose Colocasia Illustris ifโฆ
- โYou want the green-veined contrast pattern instead of solid black
- โYou have less space and want a smaller mature plant
- โYou are more likely to grow it in a large pot rather than in the ground
- โYou want a slightly easier plant to manage indoors over winter
What They Have in Common
- โขBoth are Colocasia esculenta cultivars grown from a tuber (corm)
- โขBoth thrive in constantly wet soil and can be grown in standing water
- โขBoth die back completely in cold weather and regrow from the tuber in spring
- โขBoth are toxic raw and are ornamental, not eaten, cultivars
The Verdict
Choose by scale and pattern. Black Magic is the bigger, bolder, uniformly dark option for a garden bed or pond margin with real space to fill. Illustris gives a similar dark drama at a more manageable size, with the green venation adding a pattern that a solid-black leaf cannot match โ and it copes better in a large indoor pot.
