White Rust on Broccoli
Commonly affects: Brassica oleracea var. italica (Broccoli)
White, blister-like pustules form on the underside of leaves, with corresponding yellow patches on the upper surface, and severely affected leaves distort.
Potential Causes
- 1Albugo candida fungus, favoured by cool, wet conditions
- 2Overhead watering and extended leaf wetness
- 3Poor airflow in dense plantings
Solution Steps
- 1Remove and destroy affected leaves promptly
- 2Water at the base only, avoiding overhead irrigation
- 3Improve airflow through appropriate spacing
- 4Apply a copper-based fungicide if the problem is recurring
Prevention Tip
White rust favours the same cool, wet conditions as downy mildew â the same airflow and watering fixes address both.
