White Rust on Broccoli

Commonly affects: Brassica oleracea var. italica (Broccoli)

White, blister-like pustules form on the underside of leaves, with corresponding yellow patches on the upper surface, and severely affected leaves distort.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Albugo candida fungus, favoured by cool, wet conditions
  2. 2Overhead watering and extended leaf wetness
  3. 3Poor airflow in dense plantings

Solution Steps

  1. 1Remove and destroy affected leaves promptly
  2. 2Water at the base only, avoiding overhead irrigation
  3. 3Improve airflow through appropriate spacing
  4. 4Apply a copper-based fungicide if the problem is recurring

Prevention Tip

White rust favours the same cool, wet conditions as downy mildew — the same airflow and watering fixes address both.
