Sunburn on Cactus Skin

Commonly affects: Cactaceae (Cactus)

A pale, yellow-white, or bleached patch develops on the side of the cactus facing intense sun, especially after being moved suddenly from indoor to outdoor conditions.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Sudden exposure to intense direct sun without a gradual acclimation period
  2. 2Moving a cactus outdoors for summer without hardening it off first
  3. 3A particularly intense heatwave even for an already-outdoor plant

Solution Steps

  1. 1Acclimate cacti gradually over 1-2 weeks when moving them to a sunnier location, increasing direct sun exposure incrementally
  2. 2Provide light shade cloth during the hottest, most intense sun exposure while acclimating
  3. 3Damaged tissue won't heal, but the plant will otherwise recover and continue growing normally
  4. 4Be especially careful with cacti that spent winter indoors before their first spring outdoors

Prevention Tip

Even desert cacti need a gradual transition to full outdoor sun after time indoors — sunburn from a sudden move is completely avoidable with acclimation.
