Bacterial Soft Rot on Orchid Leaves

Commonly affects: Phalaenopsis spp. and other Orchidaceae (Orchid)

A water-soaked, translucent spot appears on a leaf and spreads rapidly, turning brown-black and soft, sometimes with a distinct foul smell.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Erwinia bacteria entering through a wound or natural opening in humid conditions
  2. 2Water sitting on leaves for extended periods
  3. 3Warm, humid conditions accelerating bacterial spread

Solution Steps

  1. 1Cut away the infected area with a sterilised blade, cutting well into healthy tissue
  2. 2Apply cinnamon powder or a fungicide/bactericide to the cut surface
  3. 3Isolate the plant from others until the infection is controlled, since it can spread
  4. 4Improve airflow and avoid getting water on leaves going forward

Prevention Tip

Bacterial soft rot can spread within a day or two — inspect plants regularly and act immediately at the first sign of a water-soaked spot.
