Commonly affects: Most aroids in moist substrate — Monstera, Philodendron, Epipremnum aureum

Cuttings being propagated in water develop green or brown algae in the vessel, and the stem section submerged in water turns brown, mushy, or slimy. Roots may fail to develop or emerge briefly before dying. The combination of light, nutrients from cut tissue, and warm water creates ideal conditions for algae and bacteria to establish, progressively fouling the water and causing stem rot before rooting is complete.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Light reaching the water vessel, fuelling photosynthetic algae growth — clear glass vessels in bright light are most commonly responsible
  2. 2Warm water temperatures above 22°C accelerating bacterial and algal growth
  3. 3Infrequent water changes allowing dissolved organic matter and bacteria to accumulate
  4. 4Damaged or bruised stem tissue submerged in water providing entry points for bacteria

Solution Steps

  1. 1Use opaque or dark-coloured vessels for water propagation — eliminating light penetration dramatically reduces algae growth.
  2. 2Change the water completely every 5-7 days with fresh, room-temperature filtered or distilled water. Do not simply top up; fully replace.
  3. 3Add a small piece of activated charcoal to the vessel — it absorbs organic compounds and inhibits bacterial growth without harming roots.
  4. 4Keep only the node and base of the stem submerged — leaf and petiole tissue should remain above the waterline.
  5. 5If the stem is already rotting, cut back to firm healthy tissue with sterile scissors, air-dry for 10-15 minutes, then return to fresh water.
  6. 6Transition rooted cuttings to substrate once roots are 3-5 cm long — extended water propagation increases rot risk.

Prevention Tip

A small piece of horticultural activated charcoal in the water propagation vessel prevents fouling for significantly longer between changes — it is the single most effective low-cost improvement to water propagation setups.
