Fungus Gnats in Spider Plant Soil

Small dark flies hover around the plant and soil surface, thriving in consistently moist potting mix.
Potential Causes
- 1Consistently moist potting medium, which Spider Plant tolerates but which also favours fungus gnat breeding
- 2Organic matter in the mix breaking down and attracting egg-laying adults
- 3Overwatering keeping the medium wet for extended periods
Solution Steps
- 1Allow the top of the potting medium to dry out slightly more between waterings
- 2Use yellow sticky traps to catch and monitor adult gnats
- 3Apply a BTI product to the medium to target larvae without harming the plant
- 4Improve drainage and avoid letting water sit in a saucer
Prevention Tip
A slightly drier watering rhythm, letting just the top layer dry between waterings, discourages fungus gnats without stressing the plant.
