Pale Leaves or Fading Variegation on Spider Plant

Commonly affects: Chlorophytum comosum (Spider Plant)

Variegated cultivars lose their distinctive white or cream stripes, reverting to plain green, or leaves appear generally pale.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Insufficient light, since variegation requires good light to maintain — plants naturally revert toward more green (more chlorophyll-producing) tissue in low light
  2. 2Too much direct, intense sun in some cases causing bleaching rather than the expected pale-green fading
  3. 3Natural variability between plantlets propagated from a parent plant, some of which may simply have less variegation

Solution Steps

  1. 1Move to a brighter spot with more indirect light if variegation is fading toward plain green
  2. 2Move out of direct sun if leaves look bleached or scorched rather than simply less variegated
  3. 3Prune back stems that have reverted to solid green, since they tend to grow more vigorously and can dominate the plant over variegated growth
  4. 4Propagate plantlets from strongly variegated sections to maintain the trait in new plants

Prevention Tip

Reverted, all-green growth on a variegated Spider Plant often outcompetes the variegated sections — prune it away to keep the plant's characteristic striped look.
