Black Soft Rot at the Base of Succulents

Commonly affects: Various succulents (Crassulaceae, Aizoaceae, and others)

The base of the plant, where it meets the soil, turns black and soft, often progressing quickly up the stem if not addressed.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Fungal or bacterial infection entering through the base, usually in overly moist conditions
  2. 2Prolonged contact with wet soil at the crown
  3. 3Wounds at the base giving pathogens an entry point

Solution Steps

  1. 1Act quickly, since this type of rot can progress rapidly
  2. 2Cut away all affected tissue, checking that the remaining cut shows clean, healthy tissue
  3. 3If the rot has reached the growing point, propagate healthy upper leaves or stem cuttings to save part of the plant
  4. 4Repot any surviving portion into fresh, fast-draining mix

Prevention Tip

Fast-moving base rot needs immediate action — cutting away affected tissue promptly can save the healthy upper portion of the plant even if the base is lost.
