Etiolation — Succulents Stretching and Getting Leggy

Commonly affects: Various succulents (Crassulaceae, Aizoaceae, and others)

The succulent grows tall, thin, and stretched with wide gaps between leaves, and the rosette (if applicable) loses its tight, compact form.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Insufficient light causing the plant to stretch toward available brightness
  2. 2A shaded indoor location without enough direct or bright light
  3. 3Winter's shorter days reducing available light for indoor plants

Solution Steps

  1. 1Move the plant to the brightest possible location, ideally with several hours of direct sun
  2. 2Understand that etiolated growth is permanent — new growth under better light will be compact again, but existing stretched growth won't shorten
  3. 3Consider beheading and re-rooting the top of a badly etiolated succulent to start fresh in better light
  4. 4Use supplemental grow lights in low-light homes or during winter

Prevention Tip

Beheading and re-rooting an etiolated succulent's top rosette, then starting it fresh under better light, often gives a better result than trying to fix the existing stretched growth.
