Black Sigatoka Leaf Spot on Banana
Commonly affects: Musa acuminata, M. balbisiana (Banana)
Small brown-black streaks appear on leaves, expanding into larger dead patches with yellow halos, eventually causing widespread leaf death and reduced fruit yield.
Potential Causes
- 1Mycosphaerella fijiensis fungus spread by wind-blown spores and splashing rain
- 2Warm, humid conditions with extended leaf wetness
- 3Dense plantings restricting airflow
Solution Steps
- 1Remove and destroy severely affected leaves to reduce spore load
- 2Improve spacing between plants for better airflow
