Banana Problems

Banana plants are fast-growing, heavy-feeding tropicals that reward warmth, humidity, and consistent potassium with lush paddle-shaped leaves — and, given enough time and light, home-grown fruit. Cold sensitivity and their huge water/nutrient appetite are the two things most growers underestimate.

⚠ CriticalBanana — Panama Disease (Fusarium Wilt) on Banana
Older leaves yellow at the edges and progressively collapse, hanging down around the pseudostem like a skirt, while the plant's growth stalls. Cutting the pseudostem reveals reddish-brown vascular discolouration.
⚠ CriticalBanana — Black Sigatoka Leaf Spot on Banana
Small brown-black streaks appear on leaves, expanding into larger dead patches with yellow halos, eventually causing widespread leaf death and reduced fruit yield.
⚠ CriticalBanana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV)
New leaves emerge progressively smaller, narrower, and more upright, giving the plant a stunted, bunched rosette appearance at the top. Dark green streaks ('Morse code' pattern) appear along leaf veins and petioles.

Small dark aphids cluster on the underside of young leaves and around the base of the pseudostem, feeding on sap and potentially transmitting bunchy top virus.
⚠ ModerateBanana Weevil Borers
Adult weevils chew notches in the base of the pseudostem, while larvae tunnel through the corm and stem base, causing weakened plants that can topple in wind.

The plant shows stunted growth, poor fruit bunches, and increased susceptibility to toppling in wind. Roots show reddish-black lesions and reduced root mass when examined.
