Panama Disease (Fusarium Wilt) on Banana

Commonly affects: Musa acuminata, M. balbisiana (Banana)

Older leaves yellow at the edges and progressively collapse, hanging down around the pseudostem like a skirt, while the plant's growth stalls. Cutting the pseudostem reveals reddish-brown vascular discolouration.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense fungus, persisting in soil for decades
  2. 2Infected planting material (corms/suckers) introducing the pathogen
  3. 3Movement of contaminated soil or tools between infected and healthy areas

Solution Steps

  1. 1Remove and destroy infected plants completely, including the corm
  2. 2Do not replant bananas in confirmed infected soil — the fungus persists for 20+ years
  3. 3Disinfect tools thoroughly between plants and areas
  4. 4Use certified disease-free planting material and resistant cultivars where available

Prevention Tip

Panama disease has no cure and the fungus persists in soil for decades — prevention through clean planting material is the only real defence.
