Black Rot on Broccoli
Commonly affects: Brassica oleracea var. italica (Broccoli)
V-shaped yellow lesions form at leaf margins, with blackened veins visible within the yellowed tissue, eventually causing the whole leaf to die.
Potential Causes
- 1Xanthomonas campestris bacteria, often introduced via infected seed
- 2Wet, warm conditions favouring bacterial spread
- 3Splashing water spreading bacteria between plants
Solution Steps
- 1Remove and destroy severely affected plants
- 2Water at the base only, avoiding overhead irrigation
- 3Source certified disease-free seed or transplants
- 4Rotate away from brassicas for 2-3 years in affected beds
Prevention Tip
Black rot is most often introduced through infected seed â starting with certified disease-free seed prevents most outbreaks.
