Fungal Leaf Spot on Ferns

Commonly affects: Various ferns (Polypodiopsida)

Small, dark, circular spots appear on fronds, sometimes with a yellow halo, and can merge into larger dead patches over time.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Various fungal pathogens favoured by high humidity combined with poor air circulation
  2. 2Water splashing onto fronds during watering or misting
  3. 3Overcrowded plants restricting airflow

Solution Steps

  1. 1Remove and destroy severely affected fronds
  2. 2Improve air circulation with a small fan running nearby
  3. 3Water at the soil level, avoiding wetting the foliage where possible
  4. 4Apply a fungicide if the problem is spreading significantly

Prevention Tip

Ferns need high humidity but also good air movement — still, stagnant humid air is what actually favours fungal leaf spot.
