Yellowing Fern Fronds

Commonly affects: Various ferns (Polypodiopsida)

Fronds turn yellow, sometimes uniformly and sometimes starting at the base, before eventually browning and dying.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Overwatering, causing root stress that shows as yellowing
  2. 2Too much direct light for a plant that generally prefers shade to filtered light
  3. 3Natural aging of the oldest, lowest fronds

Solution Steps

  1. 1Check soil moisture and reduce watering frequency if it's staying wet for extended periods
  2. 2Move to a spot with bright, indirect or filtered light rather than direct sun
  3. 3Accept some yellowing of the oldest fronds as normal turnover
  4. 4Trim yellowed fronds at the base once they're clearly declining
