Zinc Deficiency — Small, Distorted New Leaves & Shortened Internodes

Commonly affects: Monstera deliciosa, Philodendron spp., Anthurium andraeanum, Alocasia spp.

New leaves emerge unusually small, often half the size expected for the variety, with short, compacted internodal distances creating a rosette-like cluster. Leaves may be slightly misshapen or wrinkled. Zinc is essential for the production of auxin (the primary growth hormone) and for enzyme activation in chlorophyll synthesis — its deficiency causes a distinctive 'little leaf' syndrome that is easily confused with the effects of insufficient light.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Substrate pH above 6.5 causing zinc to form insoluble hydroxide and carbonate compounds unavailable to plants
  2. 2Excess phosphorus in the fertiliser competing with zinc uptake at root level — overfertilisation with phosphorus-rich products is a common cause
  3. 3Low zinc content in peat-based media that has been used for more than one year without supplemental micronutrient feeding
  4. 4High calcium and magnesium levels in hard water or calcium-heavy fertilisers antagonising zinc uptake

Solution Steps

  1. 1Apply a foliar spray of zinc sulphate (ZnSO₄ at 0.05–0.1% solution) directly to new growth — foliar uptake is 6–8× faster than root uptake for zinc.
  2. 2Test and correct substrate pH to 5.5–6.2 — zinc availability drops sharply above pH 6.5.
  3. 3Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers until the deficiency is corrected — phosphorus directly antagonises zinc uptake.
  4. 4Switch to a complete micronutrient fertiliser containing chelated zinc (Zn-EDTA or Zn-DTPA) as part of a regular feeding program.
  5. 5Allow 4–6 weeks for improvement in new leaf size before reassessing — zinc response time is slower than nitrogen or iron.
  6. 6Increase watering frequency slightly to ensure adequate zinc transport through the xylem stream.

Prevention Tip

Include a comprehensive micronutrient supplement (with zinc, manganese, copper, and boron) in your fertiliser rotation every 4–6 weeks. Zinc deficiency is rare with consistent micronutrient supplementation but common when only NPK fertilisers are used for extended periods.
