Phosphorus Deficiency — Purple-Tinted Leaves & Stunted Growth
Commonly affects: Monstera deliciosa, Philodendron spp., Anthurium andraeanum, Alocasia spp.
Leaves develop a distinct purple or reddish-purple discolouration on their undersides, sometimes extending to the upper leaf surface in severe cases. Growth slows dramatically. Older lower leaves are affected first, as phosphorus is mobile and translocated to actively growing tissue. The purple tint results from anthocyanin accumulation — a stress pigment the plant produces when phosphorus-dependent energy transfer (ATP) pathways are disrupted.
Potential Causes
- 1Insufficient phosphorus in the potting substrate or fertiliser program — common in plants grown in bark-heavy or inert media without supplemental nutrients

- 2Apply a phosphorus-rich liquid fertiliser as a root drench (e.g., mono-potassium phosphate at 150–200 ppm P) to provide immediately available phosphorus.
- 3For rapid correction, apply a foliar spray of dilute liquid phosphate — leaves absorb phosphate ions directly through stomata, bypassing root uptake issues.
- 4Ensure the plant is in a warm location (minimum 18°C) — cold substrates dramatically reduce phosphorus uptake capacity regardless of nutrient concentration.
- 5Review long-term fertilisation: switch to a complete NPK fertiliser that includes 3–5% phosphorus (P₂O₅) and apply throughout the growing season.
- 6Affected leaves will not fully recover their colour — monitor new growth for improvement to confirm the deficiency has been corrected.
