Anthracnose on Grape Vines
Commonly affects: Vitis vinifera, V. labrusca (Grape)
Small circular spots with dark borders and pale grey centres appear on leaves, shoots, and berries, sometimes creating a 'bird's eye' pattern on fruit.
Potential Causes
- 1Elsinoe ampelina fungus, favoured by warm, wet spring conditions
- 2Overwintering in infected canes and plant debris
- 3Wet weather during early shoot growth favouring infection
Solution Steps
- 1Remove and destroy infected canes and debris at the end of the season
- 2Apply a protective fungicide during early shoot growth in wet springs
- 3Improve airflow through proper pruning
- 4Avoid working around wet vines, which can spread spores
Prevention Tip
Anthracnose overwinters in infected canes â thorough dormant-season pruning and cane removal significantly reduces the following year's infection pressure.
