Leafhoppers on Grape Vines

Commonly affects: Vitis vinifera, V. labrusca (Grape)

Fine white-yellow stippling spreads across leaves, sometimes with small white insects visible flying up when the vine is disturbed.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Leafhopper feeding on leaf sap, causing stippled damage
  2. 2Warm weather supporting multiple generations per season
  3. 3Dense canopy providing shelter for nymphs and adults

Solution Steps

  1. 1Apply insecticidal soap to the underside of leaves where nymphs congregate
  2. 2Introduce or protect natural predators such as lacewings and parasitic wasps
  3. 3Remove excess canopy growth to reduce shelter for leafhoppers
  4. 4Monitor populations with yellow sticky traps

Prevention Tip

Leafhoppers rarely cause serious damage alone but can vector some grape diseases — keeping populations moderate through natural predators is usually sufficient.
