Lavender Struggling in Clay or Heavy Soil
Commonly affects: Lavandula angustifolia / L. x intermedia (Lavender)
The plant fails to thrive, grows slowly, or declines over time despite seemingly adequate light and watering, in soil that stays visibly wet or compacted after rain.
Potential Causes
- 1Heavy clay soil retaining far more moisture than lavender's Mediterranean origins can tolerate
- 2Poor natural drainage in the planting location, with water pooling after rain
- 3Compacted soil restricting root development and aeration
Solution Steps
- 1Amend heavy clay soil generously with grit, sand, or fine gravel before planting to improve drainage
- 2Plant on a raised mound or in a raised bed if the native soil is heavy or poorly-draining
- 3Avoid planting lavender in low spots where water naturally collects
- 4Consider growing in containers with a fast-draining mix if garden soil conditions can't be sufficiently improved
Prevention Tip
If a garden's native soil is heavy clay, planting lavender on a raised mound is often more effective and less labour-intensive than trying to fully amend the existing soil.
