Orchid Growing Roots Outside the Pot
Commonly affects: Phalaenopsis spp. and other Orchidaceae (Orchid)
Thick, silvery-green roots emerge from the potting medium and grow outward into open air, sometimes extending well beyond the pot's rim.
Potential Causes
- 1This is completely normal behaviour for epiphytic orchids like Phalaenopsis, which naturally grow on tree bark in the wild with roots exposed to air
- 2Not a sign of a problem or a pot that's too small
- 3Aerial roots absorb humidity from the air just as effectively as roots in the medium
Solution Steps
- 1No treatment needed â this is healthy, natural growth for an epiphytic plant
- 2Leave aerial roots alone rather than trying to force them into the pot
- 3Only consider repotting if the plant is genuinely outgrowing its container for other reasons, not because of aerial roots specifically
Prevention Tip
Aerial roots reaching out of the pot are a sign of a happy, healthy epiphytic orchid doing exactly what it would in the wild â not a problem to fix.
