Fungal Leaf Spot on Palms
Commonly affects: Various palms (Arecaceae)
Small, circular or irregular dark spots appear on fronds, sometimes with a yellow halo, occasionally merging into larger dead patches.
Potential Causes
- 1Various fungal pathogens favoured by high humidity combined with poor air circulation
- 2Water splashing onto fronds during watering
- 3Overcrowded plants restricting airflow
Solution Steps
- 1Remove and destroy severely affected fronds
- 2Improve air circulation around the plant
- 3Water at the soil level, avoiding wetting the foliage where possible
- 4Apply a fungicide labelled for palms if the problem is spreading
Prevention Tip
Watering at the soil level rather than overhead is the simplest way to reduce fungal leaf spot risk on palms.
