Yellowing Fronds From Nutrient Deficiency in Palms
Commonly affects: Various palms (Arecaceae)
Older, lower fronds turn yellow, sometimes with distinct patterns like yellow-orange banding or spotting, while newer growth stays green.
Potential Causes
- 1Potassium deficiency, one of the most common nutrient issues in palms, causing yellow-orange spotting on older fronds that progresses to necrotic spots
- 2Magnesium deficiency, causing a distinctive yellow band along the frond edge while the centre stays green
- 3Palms being particularly prone to nutrient deficiencies since they can't easily remobilise certain nutrients
Solution Steps
- 1Feed with a palm-specific slow-release fertiliser formulated with adequate potassium and magnesium
- 2Avoid removing deficient older fronds too early, since palms draw remaining nutrients from them before they die
- 3Apply supplemental Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) if magnesium deficiency's characteristic yellow banding is present
- 4Be patient, since correcting deficiency takes time as new growth emerges healthier while old fronds remain affected
Prevention Tip
Palms are especially prone to potassium and magnesium deficiency â a palm-specific fertiliser addresses this far better than a generic all-purpose feed.
