Cucumber Beetles on Pumpkin
Commonly affects: Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, C. moschata (Pumpkin)
Small yellow-and-black striped or spotted beetles feed on leaves, stems, and flowers, leaving ragged holes and scarring. Seedlings can be killed outright by heavy feeding, and beetles carry bacterial wilt between plants.
Potential Causes
- 1Striped or spotted cucumber beetle adults emerging in spring and feeding on young Cucurbita plants
- 2Overwintering adults in garden debris or nearby wild host plants
- 3Beetle larvae also feeding on roots underground, weakening the plant further
Solution Steps
- 1Cover young seedlings with floating row covers, removing them once flowering begins so pollinators can access blooms.
- 2Hand-pick beetles in the early morning when they're sluggish, dropping them into soapy water.
- 3Apply a pyrethrin-based spray for heavy infestations, ideally in the evening to protect bees.
- 4Clear garden debris in autumn to reduce overwintering beetle populations.
Prevention Tip
Row covers on seedlings are the single most effective defence â young plants are most vulnerable, and beetles are also the vector for bacterial wilt, making early protection doubly important.
