Rosemary Struggling Indoors With Slow, Weak Growth
Commonly affects: Salvia rosmarinus (Rosemary)
The plant produces thin, weak, sparse growth when kept indoors, often stretching toward a window and looking noticeably less vigorous than rosemary grown outdoors in full sun.
Potential Causes
- 1Insufficient light, since indoor windowsills rarely match the intensity of full outdoor sun that rosemary needs
- 2Poor airflow indoors, which rosemary needs to avoid fungal issues and stay compact
- 3Overwatering, which is more common indoors where soil dries more slowly than outdoors
Solution Steps
- 1Provide the brightest possible indoor location, ideally a south-facing window, or supplement with a grow light.
- 2Run a small fan nearby occasionally to improve airflow and mimic outdoor conditions.
- 3Let the soil dry out more between waterings than you would expect for other houseplants.
- 4Move the plant outdoors during warm months if possible, even temporarily, to boost vigour before bringing it back in for winter.
Prevention Tip
Rosemary is genuinely difficult to keep thriving long-term indoors ïŋ― the strongest results come from giving it maximum light and airflow, and moving it outdoors whenever the weather allows.
