Brown, Mushy Leaves on Aloe Vera

Commonly affects: Aloe vera (Aloe Vera)

Lower or outer leaves turn brown, soft, and translucent, sometimes collapsing entirely, distinct from the normal grey-green colour of healthy leaves.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Overwatering causing leaf tissue to break down from excess moisture
  2. 2Underlying root rot reducing the plant's ability to process water properly
  3. 3Cold damage in some cases, if exposure has been recent

Solution Steps

  1. 1Remove clearly mushy leaves to prevent the issue spreading
  2. 2Check root health and reduce watering significantly if roots are healthy but leaves are still affected
  3. 3Repot into fresh, fast-draining mix if root rot is found
  4. 4Water only when soil is completely dry going forward

Prevention Tip

Mushy leaves on an aloe are a watering problem almost every time — cut back before assuming pests or disease.
