Wrinkling and Shrivelling in Cacti
Commonly affects: Cactaceae (Cactus)
The cactus body develops visible wrinkles or a shrunken, deflated appearance, most noticeable along its ribs.
Potential Causes
- 1Underwatering â the plant is drawing on its internal water reserves faster than they're being replenished
- 2Root damage (from rot, repotting, or pests) limiting water uptake despite adequate watering
- 3Extended drought period, sometimes intentional during dormancy
Solution Steps
- 1Water thoroughly and check that water is actually reaching and draining through the root zone
- 2If wrinkling persists despite watering, check root health for damage or rot
- 3Some seasonal wrinkling during a deliberate winter dormancy rest is normal and self-corrects with the return of the growing season
- 4Resume a normal watering schedule once the underlying cause is addressed
