Hydrophobic Substrate — Water Channeling
Commonly affects: Aroids in peat- or coir-heavy mixes — Monstera, Philodendron, Syngonium
Water poured onto the substrate runs straight down the sides of the pot and out the drainage holes within seconds, leaving the root ball dry inside. The plant shows drought symptoms despite apparently being watered, and the substrate surface may look dry and dusty or have shrunk away from the pot wall. Peat- and coir-based mixes that have dried out completely become water-repellent.

- 2Add a drop of mild soap or a wetting agent to the soak water to break the surface tension if the mix strongly repels water.
- 3Follow with a slow top watering to confirm the whole root ball is now absorbing.
- 4If the mix has broken down or repeatedly repels water, repot into a fresh, well-structured aroid mix.
- 5Incorporate materials like bark, perlite, and a little coco coir to improve re-wetting and aeration.
- 6Avoid letting the substrate dry out completely in future to prevent recurrence.

Never let a peat- or coir-based mix dry out completely — once it does, it repels water and the plant stays thirsty despite watering. A chunky, well-aerated aroid mix re-wets far more reliably than fine, peaty substrate.
