Growth
Yellowing on Cactus Bodies
Commonly affects: Cactaceae (Cactus)
The cactus body takes on an unusual yellow or pale tint rather than its normal green colour, sometimes starting at the top or on the sun-facing side.
Potential Causes
- 1Overwatering causing general stress that shows as discolouration
- 2Too much direct, intense sun for species that prefer some protection
- 3Nutrient deficiency in old, depleted potting mix
- 4Natural colour variation in some species that isn't a problem at all
Solution Steps
- 1Check watering practice first, since overwatering is the most common cause of stress-related colour change
- 2Provide light shade if intense sun seems to be the cause, particularly for shade-tolerant species
- 3Feed with a diluted cactus-specific fertiliser during the growing season if soil is old and depleted
- 4Research your specific species, since some naturally have yellow-green colouring that isn't abnormal
Prevention Tip
Correct watering practice resolves most cases of unexpected cactus yellowing before you need to consider light or feeding adjustments.
