Yellowing on Cactus Bodies

Commonly affects: Cactaceae (Cactus)

The cactus body takes on an unusual yellow or pale tint rather than its normal green colour, sometimes starting at the top or on the sun-facing side.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Overwatering causing general stress that shows as discolouration
  2. 2Too much direct, intense sun for species that prefer some protection
  3. 3Nutrient deficiency in old, depleted potting mix
  4. 4Natural colour variation in some species that isn't a problem at all

Solution Steps

  1. 1Check watering practice first, since overwatering is the most common cause of stress-related colour change
  2. 2Provide light shade if intense sun seems to be the cause, particularly for shade-tolerant species
  3. 3Feed with a diluted cactus-specific fertiliser during the growing season if soil is old and depleted
  4. 4Research your specific species, since some naturally have yellow-green colouring that isn't abnormal

Prevention Tip

Correct watering practice resolves most cases of unexpected cactus yellowing before you need to consider light or feeding adjustments.
