Crispy, Brown Fern Fronds
Commonly affects: Various ferns (Polypodiopsida)
Frond tips and edges turn brown, dry, and crispy, sometimes spreading across the whole frond in advanced cases.
Potential Causes
- 1Low humidity â ferns are famously intolerant of dry indoor air, especially near heating or air conditioning
- 2Underwatering, letting the soil dry out more than ferns tolerate
- 3Tap water high in chlorine, fluoride, or salts causing tip burn
Solution Steps
- 1Increase humidity significantly with a humidifier, pebble tray, or grouping plants together
- 2Keep soil consistently moist (not waterlogged) rather than letting it dry out between waterings
- 3Switch to filtered or rain water if tap water quality seems to be a factor
- 4Trim off crispy, damaged fronds, since they won't recover, but new growth will look better with corrected care
Prevention Tip
Most ferns need humidity well above typical indoor levels â a humidifier or regular misting is often the single biggest improvement for crispy fronds.
