Leaves
Leaflet or Frond Drop on Ferns
Commonly affects: Various ferns (Polypodiopsida)
Individual leaflets or entire fronds drop from the plant, sometimes suddenly, reducing overall fullness.
Potential Causes
- 1Sudden environmental change â a move, draft, or temperature swing causing stress-related drop
- 2Underlying watering inconsistency, either too much or too little
- 3Low humidity accelerating stress and drop
- 4Natural shedding of old fronds as part of normal growth
Solution Steps
- 1Keep the plant in a stable location away from drafts and sudden temperature changes
- 2Maintain consistent watering and humidity
- 3Accept the occasional old frond dying back and being trimmed as normal
- 4Be patient after a stressful event, since ferns typically recover with stable conditions
Prevention Tip
Ferns respond poorly to sudden change â keeping conditions stable prevents much of the leaflet drop that follows a move or draft.
