Leaflet or Frond Drop on Ferns

Commonly affects: Various ferns (Polypodiopsida)

Individual leaflets or entire fronds drop from the plant, sometimes suddenly, reducing overall fullness.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Sudden environmental change — a move, draft, or temperature swing causing stress-related drop
  2. 2Underlying watering inconsistency, either too much or too little
  3. 3Low humidity accelerating stress and drop
  4. 4Natural shedding of old fronds as part of normal growth

Solution Steps

  1. 1Keep the plant in a stable location away from drafts and sudden temperature changes
  2. 2Maintain consistent watering and humidity
  3. 3Accept the occasional old frond dying back and being trimmed as normal
  4. 4Be patient after a stressful event, since ferns typically recover with stable conditions

Prevention Tip

Ferns respond poorly to sudden change — keeping conditions stable prevents much of the leaflet drop that follows a move or draft.
