Nutrient Deficiency Yellowing in Ferns

Commonly affects: Various ferns (Polypodiopsida)

Fronds turn pale or yellow-green overall, sometimes with the oldest fronds affected first, despite otherwise correct light and watering.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Depleted potting mix that hasn't been fed in a long time
  2. 2Ferns being relatively light feeders but still needing occasional nutrition, especially in fast-draining mixes that leach nutrients quickly
  3. 3Nitrogen deficiency being the most common cause of overall pale colouring

Solution Steps

  1. 1Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season
  2. 2Avoid over-fertilising, since ferns are sensitive to fertiliser burn at full strength
  3. 3Repot into fresh potting mix if it's been several years since the last repot
  4. 4Rule out watering and light issues first, since these are more common causes of similar symptoms

Prevention Tip

Ferns need feeding far less often and at lower strength than most houseplants — always dilute fertiliser well below label strength.
