Magnesium Deficiency in Grape Vines
Commonly affects: Vitis vinifera, V. labrusca (Grape)
Yellowing appears between leaf veins on older leaves, starting at the base of the shoot and progressing toward the tip as the season advances.
Potential Causes
- 1Magnesium-poor soil, common in sandy or acidic growing conditions
- 2High potassium fertilisation competing with magnesium uptake
- 3Heavy cropping years depleting magnesium reserves faster than replenishment
Solution Steps
- 1Apply a diluted Epsom salt foliar spray or soil drench
- 2Repeat every 3-4 weeks during the growing season until symptoms improve
- 3Balance potassium feeding with adequate magnesium, especially in heavy-cropping years
Prevention Tip
Magnesium deficiency often appears specifically in heavy-cropping years â a preventive Epsom salt application before symptoms appear can help vines with a history of this issue.
