Winter Cold Damage to Grape Buds
Commonly affects: Vitis vinifera, V. labrusca (Grape)
Buds fail to break in spring or produce weak, stunted shoots, with dead, blackened tissue visible when a damaged bud is cut open.
Potential Causes
- 1Extreme winter cold killing dormant buds, especially in marginal climates or unusually severe winters
- 2Insufficient cold hardiness for the specific variety planted
- 3Buds on more exposed, higher parts of the vine being more vulnerable than lower, sheltered ones
Solution Steps
- 1Choose cold-hardy varieties appropriate for your specific climate zone
- 2Leave extra buds during winter pruning as insurance against cold damage, removing excess in spring once damage extent is known
- 3Provide winter protection (burying canes, wrapping) in extreme climates for less hardy varieties
