Overwatering and Waterlogging in Palms

Fronds yellow or brown, growth slows, and the plant may develop a generally unhealthy appearance despite regular watering, with roots showing rot when checked.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Watering too frequently without allowing the topsoil to dry between waterings
  2. 2Poorly-draining soil or a pot without adequate drainage holes
  3. 3Water sitting in a saucer beneath the pot, keeping roots constantly wet

Solution Steps

  1. 1Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings
  2. 2Ensure the pot has adequate drainage and empty any standing water from saucers promptly
  3. 3Repot into well-draining mix if the current soil retains excessive moisture
  4. 4Check roots for rot if decline continues despite watering adjustments

Prevention Tip

Even moisture-loving palm species need soil that drains well — waterlogging, not moisture itself, is what actually damages roots.
