Passion Fruit Dropping Before Ripening

Commonly affects: Passiflora edulis (Passion Fruit)

Fruit falls from the vine while still green or only partially ripe, sometimes in significant quantity, well before reaching full size and colour.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Inconsistent watering causing stress-related fruit drop
  2. 2Incomplete pollination leading to underdeveloped fruit that the plant aborts
  3. 3Nutrient deficiency, particularly potassium, weakening fruit retention
  4. 4Overcrowded fruit load that the vine can't support to maturity

Solution Steps

  1. 1Maintain even soil moisture throughout fruit development
  2. 2Improve pollination through hand-pollination to ensure fully developed fruit
  3. 3Feed with a potassium-rich fertiliser during fruit development
  4. 4Thin excessive fruit set if the vine is visibly overloaded

Prevention Tip

Even watering and potassium-rich feeding during fruit development are the two biggest levers for reducing premature drop.
