Passion Fruit Dropping Before Ripening
Commonly affects: Passiflora edulis (Passion Fruit)
Fruit falls from the vine while still green or only partially ripe, sometimes in significant quantity, well before reaching full size and colour.
Potential Causes
- 1Inconsistent watering causing stress-related fruit drop
- 2Incomplete pollination leading to underdeveloped fruit that the plant aborts
- 3Nutrient deficiency, particularly potassium, weakening fruit retention
- 4Overcrowded fruit load that the vine can't support to maturity
Solution Steps
- 1Maintain even soil moisture throughout fruit development
- 2Improve pollination through hand-pollination to ensure fully developed fruit
- 3Feed with a potassium-rich fertiliser during fruit development
- 4Thin excessive fruit set if the vine is visibly overloaded
Prevention Tip
Even watering and potassium-rich feeding during fruit development are the two biggest levers for reducing premature drop.
