Passion Fruit Vine Flowering But Not Fruiting
Commonly affects: Passiflora edulis (Passion Fruit)
The vine produces abundant, fragrant flowers, but very few develop into fruit, with most flowers wilting and dropping within a day or two of opening.
Potential Causes
- 1Poor pollination â passion fruit flowers are only open for a single day and need specific pollinators (carpenter bees) or hand-pollination
- 2Self-incompatibility in some varieties, requiring a second genetically distinct vine
- 3Extreme heat or cold reducing pollen viability
Solution Steps
- 1Hand-pollinate by transferring pollen from the flower's anthers to its own stigma or a neighbouring flower using a small brush, done in the morning when flowers open
- 2Plant a second vine of a different variety if self-incompatibility is suspected
- 3Attract carpenter bees by leaving some dead wood or bee houses nearby
- 4Avoid pollinating during the hottest part of the day when pollen viability drops
