Blossom Drop Flowers Falling Before Fruiting

Commonly affects: Capsicum annuum, Capsicum chinense (Chili Pepper)

Flowers form normally but wither and drop off within a few days, without ever setting fruit. The plant otherwise looks healthy, with green foliage and continued new flower production, but very few flowers actually convert to peppers.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Daytime temperatures above 32C or nighttime temperatures below 15C stressing pollen viability
  2. 2Low humidity causing pollen to dry out before pollination can occur
  3. 3Poor pollination due to lack of wind movement or pollinating insects, especially indoors
  4. 4Excess nitrogen fertiliser encouraging leafy growth at the expense of fruit set
  5. 5Inconsistent watering causing general plant stress during flowering

Solution Steps

  1. 1Move container-grown plants to a location with more airflow, or gently shake flowering stems by hand daily to aid pollination.
  2. 2Provide light afternoon shade during heatwaves above 32C to protect flower viability.
  3. 3Reduce nitrogen-heavy feeding and switch to a bloom-boosting fertiliser higher in phosphorus and potassium once flowering begins.
  4. 4Maintain even soil moisture avoid letting the plant dry out completely between waterings.
  5. 5Mist flowers lightly in the morning during dry spells to help pollen adhere and germinate.

Prevention Tip

Keep daytime temperatures between 2129C where possible, and hand-pollinate indoor or greenhouse plants every few days using a small brush or by gently flicking the flower stem.
