Yellowing Leaves — Nitrogen Deficiency in Pumpkin
Commonly affects: Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, C. moschata (Pumpkin)
Older, lower leaves turn pale yellow-green uniformly, while newer growth stays a healthier green. Overall vine growth slows and leaves may be noticeably smaller than expected.
Potential Causes
- 1Insufficient nitrogen in the soil, especially in sandy or heavily leached beds
- 2Heavy rain leaching nutrients out of the root zone
- 3Competing vines or nearby plants depleting shared soil nutrients
Solution Steps
- 1Apply a balanced, nitrogen-rich fertiliser at the base of the plant, watering it in well.
- 2Side-dress with compost or a slow-release granular feed early in vine growth.
- 3Monitor new growth over the following 1-2 weeks for improved green colour.
- 4Once vines begin flowering, shift toward a lower-nitrogen, higher-phosphorus feed to support fruiting.
Prevention Tip
Pumpkins are heavy feeders through their vegetative stage — working generous compost or aged manure into the bed before planting prevents most nitrogen deficiency issues.
