Pumpkin Flowers Not Setting Fruit
Commonly affects: Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, C. moschata (Pumpkin)
The vine produces plenty of flowers, but they wither and drop without developing into fruit, or tiny fruit start to form and then shrivel and rot within days of the flower closing.
Potential Causes
- 1Poor pollination — pumpkins need bees or hand-pollination to transfer pollen from male to female flowers
- 2Male flowers only, especially early in the season, before female flowers (identifiable by a small swollen ovary behind the petals) appear
- 3Excessive nitrogen encouraging vine and leaf growth at the expense of flowering
- 4Extreme heat above 32°C reducing pollen viability
Solution Steps
- 1Hand-pollinate by transferring pollen from a freshly opened male flower to the centre of a female flower using a small brush, ideally in the morning.
- 2Be patient early in the season — plants often produce only male flowers for the first few weeks before female flowers begin.
- 3Reduce nitrogen fertiliser and switch to a phosphorus-potassium bloom feed once flowering begins.
- 4Attract pollinators by planting bee-friendly flowers nearby and avoiding pesticide use during flowering.

Learn to identify male versus female flowers (females have a small round swelling behind the petals) so you know when hand-pollination is actually possible and needed.
