Yellowing Leaves — Nitrogen Deficiency in Strawberries

Commonly affects: Fragaria × ananassa (Strawberry)

Older leaves turn pale yellow-green uniformly while new growth stays a healthier colour, and overall plant vigour and fruit production decline.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Insufficient nitrogen in the soil
  2. 2Heavy rain leaching nutrients from the root zone
  3. 3Depleted soil that hasn't been fed since planting

Solution Steps

  1. 1Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as growth resumes
  2. 2Side-dress with compost after the main fruiting flush
  3. 3Avoid excessive nitrogen during flowering, since too much can favour leaf growth over fruit

Prevention Tip

Feed strawberries lightly but consistently — heavy nitrogen, especially during flowering, can actually reduce fruit production in favour of leafy growth.
