Yellowing Leaves — Nitrogen Deficiency in Strawberries
Commonly affects: Fragaria × ananassa (Strawberry)
Older leaves turn pale yellow-green uniformly while new growth stays a healthier colour, and overall plant vigour and fruit production decline.
Potential Causes
- 1Insufficient nitrogen in the soil
- 2Heavy rain leaching nutrients from the root zone
- 3Depleted soil that hasn't been fed since planting
Solution Steps
- 1Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as growth resumes
- 2Side-dress with compost after the main fruiting flush
- 3Avoid excessive nitrogen during flowering, since too much can favour leaf growth over fruit
Prevention Tip
Feed strawberries lightly but consistently — heavy nitrogen, especially during flowering, can actually reduce fruit production in favour of leafy growth.
