Leggy, Stretched Growth in Aloe Vera

The plant grows tall and thin with leaves spaced far apart rather than in a tight rosette, and leaves may appear pale and narrow.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Insufficient light causing the plant to stretch toward available brightness
  2. 2A shaded indoor location without enough direct or bright light
  3. 3Winter's shorter days reducing available light

Solution Steps

  1. 1Move the plant to the brightest possible location, ideally with several hours of direct sun
  2. 2Understand that already-stretched growth won't shorten — new growth under better light will be more compact
  3. 3Consider propagating offsets or beheading and re-rooting a badly-stretched plant to start fresh under better light
  4. 4Rotate the plant regularly if light comes from one direction

Prevention Tip

Aloe needs significantly more light than most people give it indoors — a south-facing window or supplemental grow light prevents legginess.
