Overcrowded Pups (Offsets) Restricting Aloe Growth
Commonly affects: Aloe vera (Aloe Vera)
The pot becomes densely packed with small offset plants ('pups') around the main plant, and overall vigour or growth slows as space and nutrients become limited.
Potential Causes
- 1Aloe naturally produces offsets that multiply over time, eventually overcrowding the pot if never divided
- 2The plant left in the same pot for years without repotting or dividing
- 3Restricted root space limiting each individual plant's access to water and nutrients
Solution Steps
- 1Remove the plant from its pot and gently separate pups from the main plant and each other
- 2Pot up separated pups individually in fast-draining succulent mix once they have some root development
- 3Repot the main plant into fresh soil, in the same or a slightly larger pot
- 4Divide overcrowded clusters every 1-2 years to maintain vigour
Prevention Tip
A crowded cluster of pups isn't a problem to treat medically â it's simply time to divide and repot, which usually restores vigorous growth.
