Mealybugs on Banana Plants

White, cottony masses cluster in leaf axils and around the base of the pseudostem, secreting honeydew that leads to sooty mould.

Potential Causes

  1. 1Warm, humid, sheltered conditions favouring mealybug establishment

  3. 3Dense growth around the base providing hidden shelter

Solution Steps

  1. 1Dab visible colonies with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol
  2. 2Spray thoroughly with insecticidal soap, reaching into leaf axils and the base of the plant
  3. 3Prune away dead leaf sheaths that provide hiding spots
  4. 4Introduce mealybug destroyer ladybugs for persistent infestations

Prevention Tip

Check leaf axils and the base of the pseudostem regularly — these sheltered spots are where mealybug colonies establish first.
